Is there any tales of hope out there of getting a job after years out of work with mental illness?

I have been 10 years out of paid work. I have done some voluntary work in those 10 years and have applied for a few paid jobs but rarely got an interview. I am cynical over my prospects due to societies and employers prejudices.
